MINUTES

  1. WELCOME

    President, Kate Agosta welcomed everyone.

  2. ATTENDANCE

    Attending:   Michael Blair Day, Hans Nielsen, Kate Agosta,   Barb Downey,  John Lesey,   Jean Keane, Serena Edmunds, John Arnott, Maria Pedersen, Maud Featherstone, Jill Gellatly, Mary Watson

  3. SECRETARY'S REPORT

    Minutes of previous meeting - April 19, 2006 -  Accepted.

  5. COMMITTEE REPORTS

    • MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE - Tina Stone, Pat Platt, Maud Featherstone

      • an update membership list is needed.  Please forward one to Serena so she can update e-mail addresses and forward to executive
      • Memorial trees that were just planted have died in the Hill Farm park meadow due to lack of water and care needed once planted.
      • Will let the township know that the Horticultural Society would like to take over these plantings.
      • Trees will be purchased that we can plant ourselves.  Possibly use MIKE to help establish roots when planted.
      • Trees should be planted in April or late October for best results.
      • Will ask township if the water truck could water or members will need to take in buckets until the tree is established.
      • Memorial plantings for Muriel Mactaggart and Betty Castator will take place on Sat. October 28, 2006 with a Hackberry and a Sugar Maple being planted.

    • SHOW AND JUDGING COMMITTEE - Barbara Downey

      A new list of judges is needed.  Kate will forward to Mary.

    • PROGRAM & TRIP COMMITTEE - Carol Field, Sandra Kirby, Blair Day

      • Trip to the Niagara College is scheduled for Wed. July 19, 2006.  Departing at 9:00 a.m. and returning 4:00 p.m.  Carpooling  will be decided when participation is known.  Please call Lynn Dobson - 833-8472, Blair Day - 833-5173 or Carol Field - 833-3324 for further information.

    • FLYER COMMITTEE - Kate Agosta

      150 more flyers are to be produced for the McMicheal Art Gallery display and the Lions Auction.  Kate will look after getting these printed.

    • GARDEN TOUR COMMITTEE - Maria Pedersen, John Lesey, Blair Day

      • Garden Tour took place on Sunday June 25, 2006 with 135 tickets at $10.00 each being sold.  Agreed that the same Sunday should be used again next year.
      • Ideas for next year:
      • Noted that more places are needed to sell tickets.  Suggested that the local garden and flower shops should be approached to sell tickets next year.
      • Approach Primrose garden centre and see if a discount for members could be offered.
      • Suggestion to have a gift certificate for the garden tour made up and advertised for Mother's Day.
      • More posters with better lettering needed next year.  Do not need the small ads .
      • Continue to advertise at Botinix  and the community board in park.
      • Maybe have the 1st and 9th garden listed so people how want to go on the day would know where to start.
      • Ask the library to put out gardening books and a flyer.
      • Have flowers for floral decorations at the museum tea.
      • Thank you to John Lesey for the Garden Tour signs and to Jay Harding, Dan Day, and Sameul Fernandes for putting up and taking down the signs.
      • New inserts are needed for the signs - Blair Day will look into getting them for next year.
      • Motion was made by Kate Agosta to reimburse Maria Pedersen $100.00 for gas.  Seconded by Maude and Barb.

    • REFRESHMENT COMMITTEE - Jean Keane

      • Maude to help with goodies for August.  Date is August 28th - not the 26th as shown on page 44 of the showbook.  Noted that the correct date is in the calendar.

    • PHONE COMMITTEE - Jill Gellatly

      • Jill to look into getting an updated member list with phone numbers.

    • WEBSITE - www. altflora.com/nobleton. Kate Agosta.

      • The website has been updated with last meeting minutes as well as links to upcoming events.  Articles are needed for Pot Porri.  Please pass on any information to Kate.

    • PLANT SALE - Kate Agosta, Barb Downey, Mary Watson, Blair Day

      • Plant sale is scheduled for October 21, 2006 at the Lions Auction.
      • Serena will look into where we can set up.
      • An announcement will be made at the August and September meetings.
      • Remember to label all plants and add picture if possible - remember to label all invasive/vigorous plants.  Plants to be dropped off at Blair Day's.
      • A canopy will be needed.

    • VICTORIA DAY PARADE - John Lesey, Carol Field

    • VOLUNTEER HOURS COMMITTEE - Maud Featherstone

      • Please give all hours to Maud.
      • Kate will look into the OHA reporting form.
      • Barb will pass on last years breakdown.

    • SHOW BOOK COMMITTEE - Barb Downey, Kate Agosta, Mary Watson

    • PUBLICITY & ARCHIVES - Hans Neilson, John Arnott

      • We are looking for items to create a booklet to commemorate our 50th Anniversary.
      • Barb is to ask Gail about  getting or borrowing Muriel's scrapbooks for our anniverary.
      • OHA Trillium Newsletter can be accessed online from a link on our website or Kate has a copy.

    • MEETINGS & SET-UP - John Lesey, Blair Day

      • Lynda has found a  high school student to help with setting up.  Society will pay him $10.00 per meeting.
      • Cody will be available to help for the August meeting.

    • FRONT YARD COMPETITION - Hans Neilson, Carol Fields, Blair Day

      • Township is looking after this competition.  Forms for nominations can be obtained at the Township offices with the deadline being July 14, 2006.
      • Since the Horticultural Society is not involved this committee is not needed.

    • SPECIAL PROJECTS - Blair Day, Lynda Rodgers

      • Hans reported that 3 lilacs died and needed replacing - BTN did not guarantee them.  Motion was made by Blair that Hans be reimbursed for the $57.79 to replace the lilacs - seconded by Jeane.  It was also noted that the beds need to be raised.
      • Seniors Centre and Wellesley Park looks great.
      • The garden at the 4 corners will be getting new top soil but we should wait till later to replant it.
      • Carol has tidied up the garden at the library as well as having someone from Humber Nurseries come in to look at it.  A plan will be made up for the library board to approve.  Blair spent $15.00 on plants for the barrel.
      • The 38 hosta's at the arena are doing well.  Thanks to Carol Field for the mulch and to Jay Harding, Samuel and Blair for mulching around the plants.
      • Maria has been looking after the plants that were transplanted from the 4 corners to the museum.  She did note that the township water truck was there to water.
      • John Arnott has been working on the garden at St. Alban's in Nobleton.  The church ladies are going to make a donation to help cover the costs.  A neighbour donated a truck load of manure.  John will need help in digging in the future.  John Lesey has a small tiller that can be used.

    • COMMUNITY IN BLOOMS - Lynda Rogers - absent

  6. NEW BUSINESS

    1. Visitor Day will be at our August 28, 2006 meeting.  Serena will send out invitations to Woodbridge, Schomberg and Bolton Societies.
    2.  The McMichael Art Gallery Floral Day will be held on Sunday July 23, 2006.  The display will be outdoors under a canopy.  Our display will have a history of our Society, flyers, flower displays (depending on what is available at the time) and pots of flowers.  Mary will bring her Iris sketch.  Kate, Blair, John Arnott & Mary plan to attend.  The gallery opens at 10:00 a,m,, so will need to be there early to set up.  Kate is having 150 more flyers printed up.
    3. Convention in Ottawa is August 11- 13, 2006.  Delegates will vote on our behalf on the new constitution and resolutions.  Delegates attending are Kate, Barb, Jill, Carol and Bob Field.  Delegates will determine who will be voting and non-voting and will decide how the $500.00 allowance will be shared.
    4. Kate will look after sending in a memorial tribute in the Trillium for Betty Castator and Muriel Mactaggart.  This still needs to be sent in.
    5. District 15 will be hosting the OHA convention in 2008 which is also the 50th anniversary of our Society.
    6. A request to host the District 15 AGM in April 2008 with Schomberg helping will be made.
    7. Blair and Hans will go to the Presidents meeting in September as Kate can not attend.
    8. Look into getting bulk bulbs from Trade Winds International next year.  Too late to look into it this year.

    Friday October 13th, 2006  from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, at St. Alban's Anglican Church in Nobleton.
