COMMITTEE REPORTS
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE - Tina Stone and Carl Philips
SHOW AND JUDGING COMMITTEE - Mary Watson and Barbara Downey
- Mary is having trouble getting judges.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE - Carol Field, Sandra Kirby, Joy Shubat
- The speaker for the August meeting has been changed but it will still be a person from the same organization.
- The idea of a program on hands-on container planting was welcomed, as was the idea of having afternoon social teas.
FLYER COMMITTEE - Jill Gellatly and Sheila Jarvis
- The idea was presented of having bookmarks instead of flyers for next year.
-
GARDEN TOUR COMMITTEE - Maria Pedersen, John Lesey, Carl Philips.
- What should the money earned by the garden tour be spent on? We will stick with the same dates for the Garden Tour next year - Sunday, June 26, 2005 - will let the other societies know.
REFRESHMENT COMMITTEE - Jean Keene and Joy Shubat.
PHONE COMMITTEE - Jill Gellatly
WEBSITE - www. altflora.com/nobleton. Kate Agosta.
- OHA has a new web site - take a look at it!
TRIP COMMITTEE -
- Congratulations to Carol on the great trip to Port Perry. Barrie next year's destination?
PLANT SALE COMMITTEE - Mary Watson, Kate Agosta, Barb Downey, Blair
Michael Day.
- Suggesttion for a second 2005 plant sale on October 1st with a tea, and a flower show, at a church to replace September meeting.
VICTORIA DAY PARADE COMMITTEE - John Lesey.
VOLUNTEER HOURS COMMITTEE - Carl Philips.
- It was noted that if each person has a ticket on which to record their hours, it is much easier to keep note of them.
SHOW BOOK COMMITTEE - Barb Downey, Kate Agosta, Mary Watson
- The point needs to be made wherever possible that judges of Show Books need to be qualified persons. The Etobicoke Show Book is inspirational - several ideas can be applied to ours. For instance, we could name some of the prizes given to our members after worthy members, such as Elsie St.Jacques. The committee is always on the look out for new content, photos, lists, etc. if you have anything.
PUBLICITY - Hans Nielsen
- Thanks again to Hans for the articles and notices he sends to newspapers and magazines.
ARCHIVES - Hans Nielsen, with the Assistance of John Arnott
- A winter job for Hans and John.
MEETING & SET-UP - John Lesey, Carl Philips, Joy Shubat, Jean Keane
COMMUNITY IN BLOOMS - Lynda Rogers
- Seneca College and the Cardinal Golf Club have done a really good job of making their gardens bloom. They are worth going to look at specially. Shomberg.ca is a web site also worth looking at. The judges' decision will not be announced until September. The Township and Chamber of Commerce did good work in advance of Community in Blooms and are to be commended.
AWARDS COMMITTEE - Barb Downey, Carol Field, Hans Nielsen.
- A report has been made to the President.
SPECIAL PROJECTS - Sheila Jarvis, Lynda Rogers, Kathy Ball, Joan
Jackaman.
- Joan Jackaman has Volunteer Tee shirts available (grey or white) for $11 each. They help to make people working on the society's projects look more legitimate.
Posters are needed for the gardens that have been worked on by volunteers. UV proof signs that are quite rigid would be good. Art work needed. Go with Mary Watson's art work if possible since it's original. The cost has been investigated and seems quite reasonable.
- If the projects were written up, people could be asked to work on them. At the moment we have:
- The Four Corners in King City
- Cherry Park in Nobleton
- Nobleton Cemetary
- Wellesley Park in King City
- Nobleton Sr. School
- King City Sr. Centre
- Lloydtown Rebellion Cemetary
- Nobleton Library
- King City Library
- Community in Bloom Barrels
- Weed pulling on private property
- Garden Competition Judging
- A weed burner is needed to help out the volunteers in their work.
NEW BUSINESS
- There will not be an OHA booth at the CNE this year.
- Kate Agosta gave a brief report on the OHA Annual Meeting she attended.
- A list of job responsibilities and a copy of the constitution should be given to each new member of the Executive of Horticultural Societies so that the new recruits know what their duties are.
- Liability costs have gone up to 49¢ per member. OHA fees are going up.
- The speakers were excellent. The theme was The Garden Within and the push was for NO CHEMICALS - of any type - in the home garden.
- The OHA will have a special purple tulip available for sale as a fund raiser - we would get $1 per bag. The bags will cost $8-10 and will be available in Sept. 2005.
- Joan Jackaman spoke about the vacant lot in Nobleton that could be planted with wild flowers as a society show piece. It will cost about $ 100 for the wildflower seeds. This would plant about 500 sq. feet. No Round Up to be used. Therefore we need to use cardboard, carpet or newspaper to prepare the soil for planting.
