Board Meeting on Thursday, Apr. 15th, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at the King City Senior's Centre

MINUTES

  1. WELCOME

    Lynda Rogers, Vice President, presided and welcomed everyone to the meeting.

     

  2. ATTENDANCE

    Attending:   Hans Neilsen, Kate Agosta, Mary Watson,  Maria Pedersen, Roz Elson, Joy Shubat,  Linda Rogers,  Carol Field, Barb Downey, John Lesey, Tina Stone
    Absent:   Michael Blair Day, Joan Jackaman, Gail Hughes, Jean Keane, Nola Stacey, Jill Gellatly, Carl Phillips

     

  3. SECRETARY'S REPORT

    Minutes of previous meeting distributed.  Acceptance moved by Joy Shubat. seconded by Carol Field.

     

  4. TREASURER'S REPORT

    Carol Field presented the report. As of the end of March, 2004, the balance was $3,517.37.  This amount includes the grant of $1,000.

     

  5. COMMITTEE REPORTS

    • MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE - Tina Stone and Carl Phillips

      • 43 members so far..
      • An accurate e-mail address list still needed.
      • Congratulations on the very nice membership card for this year.


    • SHOW AND JUDGING COMMITTEE - Mary Watson and Barbara Downey

      • Suggestion that ribbons just be awarded at final meeting as prizes for the year. Discussion on-going.

    • PROGRAM COMMITTEE - Carol Field, Sandra Kirby, Joy Shubat

      • All set for the year..

    • FLYER COMMITTEE - Jill Gellatly and Sheila Jarvis

      • Flyers needed to be distributed at Plant Sale in Nobleton as well as for Garden Tour.
      • Different colours of paper from year to year would be helpful.

    • GARDEN TOUR COMMITTEE: Maria Pedersen, John Lesey, Carl Phillips.

      • Kingcrafts wants to piggy-back on the Garden Tour and hold a craft sale the same day. Maria will ask them to share the cost of the ticket and to sell tickets as well. Hans will include the Kingcrafts in further advertising about the Tour.
      • Maria showed the Garden Tour Flyer - great job! She got a good price for the printing.
      • Kate said some Societies give a gift 1-year membership to the garden owners so that all gardens on the tour then belong to "members" and the society has more members too.

    • REFRESHMENT COMMITTEE - Jean Keene and Joy Shubat.

      • Joy passed around a list for volunteers to provide refreshments at the last meeting and it was filled. Thanks to all who are contributing.
      • Joy ordered all the supplies for the coffee and refreshments that we are providing at the May 1st District 15 meeting in Woodbridge. The Nobleton IGA gave us a discount - thanks to them, too.

    • PHONE COMMITTEE - Jill Gellatly

      • Phone list to be used to let new members know that the date in the local papers for the April meeting is incorrect.

    • WEBSITE - www. altflora.com/nobleton. Kate Agosta.

      • Kate has re-vamped the website and would like feedback, please. Photos are needed for the District 15 meeting.

    • TRIP COMMITTEE -

      • Go train to Canada Blooms worked well. Note for next year. (There are at least 5 buses a day from King to Union Station too.)
      • Many King members joined the Schomberg  bus to Canada Blooms.
      • Trip to Port Perry in July a possibility, including a stop at a wholesale nursery. A trip to the Music Garden in Toronto was also suggested.

    • PLANT SALE COMMITTEE - Mary Watson, Kate Agosta, Barb Downey, Blair Michael Day.

      • The theme for the 2004 Victoria Day Parade is a Victorian Tea Party plus all things Victorian.
      • Hans, Blair and Joy's places for plant drop-off for the sale.
      • Plastic table cloths would protect the tables used for the plants.

    • VICTORIA DAY PARADE COMMITTEE - John Lesey.

      • The parade is to start at !:00 pm at the Nobleton Library

    • VOLUNTEER HOURS COMMITTEE - Carl Philips.

      • Hours need to be reported to Carl. Maybe honour the person who has donated the most hours at the annual meeting.

    • SHOW BOOK COMMITTEE - Barb Downey, Kate Agosta, Mary Watson

      • The book is done. Congratulations to everyone who helped to make it look so good..

    • DRAW TICKET, DOOR PRIZES COMMITTEE - Joan Jackaman and Linda Rogers

      • Nothing reported.

    • PUBLICITY - Hans Nielsen

      • Publicity going well. We are now in the Bolton papers and on the Peel Region Web site.
      • Kate needs Hans' articles in electronic form for the website, if anyone can help.


    • ARCHIVES - Hans Nielsen, with the Assistance of John Arnott

      • Maybe we will have some archival material at the Museum during the Garden tour.

    • MEETING & SET-UP - John Lesey, Carl Philips, Joy Shubat, Jean Keane

      • Since the memorial service and tree-dedication will be held at the April meeting before the meeting itself, there could be refreshments available before the meeting for those who came early for the ceremony.

    • COMMUNITY IN BLOOMS - Lynda Rogers

      • Planning still underway.

    • AWARDS COMMITTEE - Barb Downey, Carol Field, Hans Nielsen.

    • SPECIAL PROJECTS - Sheila Jarvis, Lynda Rogers, Kathy Ball, Joan Jackaman

      • Linda has approached a landscaper for a plan for the region land at the Old King Rd. in Nobleton.

      6.    NEW AND OTHER BUSINESS

      1. Plant sale at RBG May 6 & 8.
      2. Native Plant Sale at the Toronto Botanical Garden Sat., May 8. Be early,
      3. King Historical Society parking lot Trunk Sale. Our Garden Tour will be advertised there.
      4. District 15 General Meeting info available. At least 8 people going, with 2 delegates - Barb Downey and Maria Pederson.
      5. Mississauga Master Gardeners Meeting, Saturday, October 2, 2004. Several speakers. $40/45 for non-members.
      6. Lisa Wolfram needs entrants for the Success with Gardening Show, March 18 - 21 at the International Centre, Airport Road.
      7. Stroud Area Garden Tour, Apr. 17/18, 2004. Flyers sent to the Association such as this need to be brought to the monthly meeting so members can be informed..
      8. Vesey's Bulb Sale - Jill Gellatly sold most of the bulbs. They should be delivered before the May meeting.
      9. Linda reported on a walking tour of King she was on with the architects for the Gateway to King Twp. project. The company is Marshall Macklin Monaghan. There is an interim report and feedback is welcome. The renewal of the street-scape will be done at the same time as the ripping up of the streets for the sewers.
      10. The Garden Tour preview for workers will be held June 24 or 25th, weather permitting.
      11. What's happening at the Four Corners in King? There is no use doing much more work if it is to be ripped up by Region workers.
